MS Dhoni received Padma Bhushan, country’s third highest civilian award on Monday.Dressed in army uniform ,MSD received Padma Bhushan from Honourable President Ram Nath Kovind.It was a happy coincidence for the cricketer that he was awarded the prestigious civilian honour on the seventh anniversary of his famous World Cricket triumph.
The 37-year old Dhoni is also the 11th Indian cricketer to receive the Padma Bhushan after CK Nayudu (1956), MK Vizianagaram (1958), Vinoo Mankad (1973), Sunil Gavaskar (1980), Bhalindra Singh (1983) Prof DB Deodhar, Lala Amarnath, Kapil Dev (1991), Chandu Borde (2002) and Rahul Dravid (2013). Dhoni had earlier won the Padma Shri in 2009.
Dhoni, who is the most successful Indian captain, is the only skipper to win all the ICC trophies- ICC Cricket World Cup, World Twenty20 and the Champions Trophy. In Test cricket, he helped India achieve numero uno status in 2009. The Indian Territorial Army had conferred the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel to Dhoni on November 1, 2011, months after the country lifted its second World Cup under his leadership.
MS Dhoni announced his retirement from Test cricket in 2014 and he relinquished his captaincy in ODI cricket in 2017.Dhoni has won numerous awards in his career. He was awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award in 2007. He also holds the distinction of being the first player to win the ICC ODI Player of the Year award twice (2008, 2009).
